I
worked for 5 years at Aquinas College in Nashville for the Dominican Sister as
the Director of Admissions. This was a
job with one perk that no other job had.
Every day, hundreds of Nuns (Sisters) were praying for me. It was a revolutionary event in my life to
have that many committed women daily seeking God on my behalf. Truly, it changed my prayer life.
One
of my favorite Dominican Sisters was Sister Matthew Marie. She was a faculty member in the Education
Department at the college. She primarily
taught technology classes such as Introduction to Computers. She was also responsible for upkeep on the
computers in the computer lab as well as the computers in the lab at the
Convent. The Sisters only owned PC
computers and Sister Matthew Marie was well qualified to maintain the machines.
One
afternoon, she and I were chatting in the Aquinas College student life
department and I mentioned that my husband used to work for an Apple computer
store affiliate. She was interested and
began asking me all kinds of questions about what he did. I communicated that he primarily sold Macs to
schools. She wanted to know if he could
repair them as well. I said, “Yes,
depending upon what is wrong with them.”
She
explained that when one of the Sisters had entered the convent, she brought
an old Apple computer with her to donate to the convent computer lab. Sister Matthew Marie knew nothing about how
to fix one and the older Apple computer was not working properly. I told her to name the day and time and that
my husband would come out to fix it. She explained that the Sisters could not
pay him any money for his services; I assured her that payment would not be
necessary.
A
few weeks later, Sister asked for my husband’s assistance on a specific day and
time. He was available. He drove to Nashville and was able to fix the
issue with relative ease.
He
arrived home later than evening and told me that it went well. I was pleased that he could help out one of
the nicest Sisters at the Dominican Mother House.
A
few days later, I was working in my office when Sister Matthew Marie peeked her
head around the corner. She asked if I
was busy and I invited her in. She was holding
the most beautiful apple pie I have ever seen.
And it smelled delicious. She
explained that she did not know how to bake but that she had asked one of the
other Sisters to bake an apple pie for my husband as a thank you. It was such a nice thought. I told her he loved apple pie and how kind it
was of her to thank him.
Sister
Matthew Marie stood there with a grin from ear to ear across her face. I smiled back and asked what I had
missed. She laughed and said, “Get it? An apple pie for your husband. You know . . . since he fixed our apple
computer.” I laughed out loud at her
expression and explanation. She cracked
herself up. While it was clever for these Sisters to have thought through such
a funny token of their appreciation, it was far more humorous to see how very
proud Sister Matthew Marie was of her pun.
She is such an amazing woman.
